I am looking at purchasing a small benchtop drill press. I am uncertain what is meant by the 10" or 12" distinguishments of various drills. What does this number mean?

The measurement refers to the distance from the center of a drill (bit) to the column that holds the drill head. With a 10" model you can drill the center of a 10-inch board and with a 12" drill press, having 6 inches from bit center to column, you can drill with ease into the center of a foot-wide board.
